How to Use Live Translation for Phone Calls on a Samsung Galaxy S24

Imagine having a phone conversation with a friend who doesn’t speak the same language as you. That’s what Samsung Galaxy S24 Live Translation is all about. You can both understand each other better thanks to the Samsung Galaxy AI’s new Live Translate feature, which provides real-time word translations. This can be helpful in many scenarios, such as booking a table at an English-speaking restaurant, communicating with people while visiting another country, or even just striking up a discussion with a coworker who works overseas. This is a short guide that will help you set up and use Live Translate on your Samsung Galaxy S24 phone.

What is Live Phone Translation?

Live Translate Call, a two-way speech interpreter for phone calls, was initially made available with the Samsung Galaxy S24 series. When activated, it translates the call into a language that is easily understood by both parties. This happens in real-time, regardless of the device that the other person is using.

Let’s say, for instance, that you wish to book a table at a Korean restaurant, but you can’t since no one knows English. At that point, your speech to the receptionist will magically translate into Korean when you enable the Live Translate feature on your Galaxy S24. It doesn’t end there; you get translations of their responses back into English. Read Also: Review of Apple Vision Pro

Not only can you hear them in your native tongue, but you can also view the content on your screen. It facilitates effective communication between speakers of different languages by acting as a personal language bridge.

The feature, which is integrated into Samsung’s native Phone app and makes use of the company’s on-device AI technology, allows for real-time translations. All data is processed and stored locally on your smartphone, ensuring speed and privacy.

Live Translate now supports thirteen languages over seventeen domains; future editions will add more.

It should be noted that Samsung’s Live Translate feature, which can voice translate phone calls but not yet convert speech to text throughout the device, is not the same as the Live Translate feature on Pixel phones.

How to Enable Live Translation for Calls on a Galaxy S24

Before conversing with individuals who do not speak the same language as you, make sure Live Translate is turned on on your Samsung Galaxy S24. This can be accomplished through Settings or the Phone app. Here’s how to do it:

Enable Live Translation

First Method: From Preferences

  • Navigate to Settings on your Samsung Galaxy S24 series phone.
  • Tapping Advanced features will select Advanced intelligence.
  • Here, select Phone.
  • On the following screen, turn on Live Translate.
  • Move in a downhill direction. Choose your language in the “Me” box and the other person’s language in the “Other person” section.

For any language that hasn’t been downloaded yet, click the Download symbol. Next, select your language preference at the top of the page.

Second Method: Via the Mobile App

The Phone app is another way to activate Live Translate. Here’s how you go about it:

  • Open the Phone app on your Galaxy S24.
  • Select Settings by tapping the three vertical dots in the upper right corner.
  • Here, select Live Translate.
  • You are now able to turn on the feature and choose the language for both the other person and yourself.

Real-Time Call Translation with the Galaxy S24

Once Live Translate is enabled, you can turn it on while using your phone to make calls by following the steps listed below:

  • You can make and receive calls with your Samsung S24 series phone.
  • Select Live Translate by tapping Call Assist on your screen.
  • Bixby will begin automatically and in real-time translating your chat for you based on the language settings you’ve chosen.

Both audio and text translation of the chat will be provided. Its intriguing feature is that no matter who you contact, it remembers the language you use on every call automatically. Additionally, it works with the other party’s traditional landline and feature phones.

Note: The other party will be notified that the call is being translated and live-captioned in the selected language as soon as it begins.

Enhancing Real-Time Interpretation for Phone Conversations

You will notice extra settings that might not make sense once you enable Live Translate. That’s the way they do things.

Silence my voice: If you choose this option, the other person will only hear your words as they have been translated.

To hear someone else’s translations only—and not their actual voice—mute their voice.

Voice: In certain languages, there are different voices available. It functions in a manner akin to choosing a voice for Siri or Google Assistant. You can also adjust the speaking rate. Go at a slower speed if you or the other person require more time to comprehend.

Dialogue and intonation Presets: When making calls to specific contacts or phone numbers, you can predefine the language and voice. Select the contact and specify the language, such as Japanese, if your acquaintance speaks that language. Your phone will remember to translate in real-time from Japanese to English and vice versa when you have a follow-up chat with them.

How Live Translation Works on Real-Life Calls

We tested Samsung’s Live Translate feature for phone calls by making a call to a coworker who is not proficient in Hindi and turning on the service. I had selected “English” for his language and “Hindi” for mine, so Bixby translated his comments into Hindi for me. In the interim, I translated my replies—which were initially in Hindi into English for him.

The transition went more smoothly than expected. It could easily interpret everything we stated over the phone, save for a few difficult words. He didn’t understand the language I was speaking, but he could easily grasp what I was saying because the feature translated the audio in real-time.

Still, it can be challenging to coordinate two different voices at once. I would suggest activating the Mute My Voice and Mute Other Person’s Voice options to avoid overlapping voices and the confusion they can cause.

We’ve tested Live Translate for Calls multiple times with our Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones. It’s a welcome surprise, I must say! This is no gimmick; it performs flawlessly in real-world situations. Improvements in live call translation will occur gradually, as the technology is still in its early stages.

Will live translation be available for older Samsung phones soon?

Samsung has already announced that Galaxy AI will be available on the Galaxy S23 series, S23 FE, Z Fold 5 and Flip 5, and Galaxy Tab S9 series before the end of the first half of the year.

It’s yet unclear if Live Translate will be present during the festivities. We might not see it on earlier phones after all, given that the function makes use of on-device AI technology, which mainly depends on the capabilities of the Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in the new models.

Unfortunately, the Galaxy AI features will only be free until the end of 2025. Live Translate may not remain free beyond that time as part of it.
